Better Sleep May Be One Dental Appointment Away

Better Sleep MonthNot getting enough sleep or having disrupted sleep can play a huge role in your overall health, causing a number of negative outcomes. Poor sleep can raise your stress levels, weaken your immune system, cause high blood pressure and weight gain and impede your ability to concentrate. In more severe cases, poor sleep can cause very dangerous sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea is a disorder in which your breathing stops and starts throughout the night. In some severe cases, breathing can stop for an entire minute! In these moments of not breathing, the oxygen levels in your bloodstream drop, while your adrenaline and blood pressure go through the roof! The result, besides a very unrestful sleep and constantly feeling tired, could be a higher risk of diabetes, heart attack, stroke and even death.

May is Better Sleep Month, sponsored by the Better Sleep Council, and the purpose is to make people more aware of their sleep habits and to encourage them to talk to a health professional and seek better sleep. There are solutions to your poor sleep problems, including sleep apnea!

People are often surprised to learn that their dentist may be able to provide a solution to their sleep troubles! In less severe cases of sleep apnea, dental devices are often the recommended treatment. Most Dentists have completed special training in the area of sleep apnea and are skilled in the treatment of it using dental appliances.

There are two categories of dental devices available: Mandibular Advancement Devices (MADs) and Tongue Retaining Mouthpieces. MADs look similar to sports mouthguards and snap over your top and bottom teeth. When worn they make it so your lower jaw and tongue are pushed slightly forward. This keeps the throat muscles from obstructing airways and allows for normal breathing during sleep. Tongue retaining mouthpieces are similar to MADs but they also include a piece that goes around the tongue to hold it in a forward position and prevent it from blocking the airway.

After a consultation with your dentist, your mouth will be custom fitted for one of these devices. Make sure to wear the device as prescribed and be well on your way to a more restful and better sleep. Sweet dreams!
