Can Intermittent Fasting Improve Your Oral Health?

If you don’t already know about intermittent fasting, it’s a new diet trend where you go between periods of eating and fasting. Proponets of intermittent fasting say it helps to lose weight, up your metabolism, protect your body against diseases and maybe even live longer. But researchers have also found another benefit to this new diet trend: it lowers your risk of gum disease.

How to Fast Intermittently

There are several different methods for intermittent fasting. Some require not eating for entire days out of the week, others suggest skipping meals or having breakfast at noon, so you are fasting for 16 hours every day (assuming you have your last meal at 8.) Unlike other diets, there are no hard and fast rules about what you eat, only about when you eat. Although, it will probably be most effective if you eat sensibly.

Why it Works

When you fast, your body burns more fat for energy. Which results in weight loss. You’re also conserving energy your body would be spending on digesting during fasting hours, which means you have more energy for other things. Studies show that by reducing your calories and increasing your metabolism, fasting can also decrease inflammation and improve your blood pressure.

Intermittent Fasting and Gum Disease

So how does this benefit your overall oral health? Well, by limiting the amount of sugars in your mouth — and the time they spend in there — you can limit the bacteria that causes plaque. Plaque can lead to inflammation of the gums, which can ultimately lead to painful gum disease. Keeping your mouth free of food for 16 to 24 hours is like a daily detox for the gums and teeth.

Of course, intermittent fasting isn’t for everyone. In fact, we know some people who get downright hangry if they don’t have breakfast first thing in the morning! But if you do decide to try this life hack, you’ll not only lose weight and gain energy, you’ll also have a healthier smile!
