Mistletoe or Mistle-NO? Make Sure Your Smile is Holiday Party-Ready!

holiday smile mistletoe

You might have your ugly Christmas sweater all picked out, your cookie recipe down cold and your decorations outshining everyone’s on the block, but is your smile holiday party-ready? Check out our holiday tips and tricks to make sure you don’t get caught under the mistletoe all alone.

Go Back to the Basics

Brush, floss, then brush and floss some more! Banish your plaque buildup by making sure you brush at least twice daily for two minutes at a time, twice a day. Heck, in the twelve days before Christmas you can even throw an extra brushing in there at midday! Dr. Heller recommends squeezing in an extra cleaning after lunch. But wait at least 30 minutes so as not to damage the enamel on your teeth! And if bringing an extra brush to work is not your bag, you can at least do an after-lunch floss to keep your teeth as clean as the driven snow.

Don’t Drink This

Christmas means Christmas drink season, but all those peppermint lattes, champagnes and mulled ciders have one thing in common: lots of acids and sugars! Which can soften your enamel and cause cavities and tooth sensitivity. In order to maximize your intake and minimize your damage, opt for a low-sugar alternative like a nonfat latte or vodka soda. You can protect your smile even more by drinking it through a straw!

Hydrate!

Banish bad breath by making sure you hydrate before and during the party. Load up on water before the festivities, and make sure to drink one glass of H2O between each holiday drink. Opting for crudites instead of crackers can also help increase your saliva flow, which helps rinse away bacteria and bad breath!

But if you really want to make sure you’re mistletoe ready this holiday season, make an appointment to see your dentist ASAP! It’s the gift that keeps on giving!
